“…I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” – Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
The above verse speaks of God’s control, both in ancient times and today.
Psalm 23 begins with, “The Lord is my Shepherd…” – present tense. Today. We may not see the path, but God’s rod and staff still comfort us (Verse 4). We may not see the danger, but we trust the rod to battle it away.
The rod and the staff are two simple tools. And a big promise, “…they comfort me…”. Psalm 23 is David’s personal testimony, and he’s not writing theory. He’s writing from the field, from the cave, from the valley. He’s writing based on his Shepherd’s work – the Shepherd who kept him.
Brothers and sisters, God’s Rod:
- Protects. The enemy cannot touch you with the Shepherd seeing. Isaiah 54:17, NKJV says, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper…”
- Disciplines. Hebrews 12:6, NIV says, “…the Lord disciplines the one He loves…” God redirects us to keep us safe.
- Has Authority. Jesus has all authority (Matthew 28:18). The rod reminds us that the battle is already won. When David says, “your rod… comforts me,” he means: ‘I am safe because God defends me.’ When challenges arise, the Rod’s comfort saying, “I’ve got you. I will defend you.”
The Staff:
1. Provides Guidance. Psalm 119:105, NIV says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet…,” while Psalm 23:3, NIV says, “…He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.” God’s Word nudges us in the right direction.
2. Rescues. Literally, the curved end of the staff pulls sheep out of the ditches. When we fall or wander, Jesus pulls us back. He refreshes our soul (Psalm 23:3).
3. Comforts. The Staff is close; it is personal, symbolising care and relationship. We are reminded in 1st Peter 5:7 to cast all our anxiety upon God because He cares for us.
David trusted the Shepherd in his valleys. We should trust the same Shepherd in ours. The same God who was in control of David is still in control of us. Same God. Same control. Same comfort.
